Human rights activists and political leaders gathered to pay their last respects to the late Professor GN Saibaba, whose remains were brought to the Martyrs Memorial at Gun Park near the Telangana Assembly on Monday morning.

Tensions arose between the police and activists when they were asked to leave shortly after the arrival of the remains.

Professor Kasim recalled how Professor Saibaba mobilised 200,000 people for a massive public meeting in Warangal in December 1998, leading to the "Warangal Declaration" in support of the Telangana statehood movement.

"Even former Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao acknowledged the significance of the Warangal Declaration in the assembly after taking office in 2014," he noted.

Saibaba advocated for quality education, equal opportunities, and access to healthcare for all.

He raised concerns about the attacks on Adivasis in Chhattisgarh and championed their rights over natural resources.

"Generations will draw inspiration from his work and sacrifice," added Professor Kasim.

Activists shouted “Laal Salaam” slogans before proceeding to Moula Ali, where Saibaba’s remains were to be kept before being donated to Gandhi Medical College for research.

GN Saibaba passed away on October 13 due to complications following gallbladder surgery at the Nizams Institute of Medical Sciences in Hyderabad.
